Research about concrete, wrap and tension

Part1: Reason for me to make a snake sculpture.

My group in the class was given a topic relate to three words: concrete, wrap and tension. If you look at the topic directly, it can be a hard job to connect concrete and the word “Wrap”, as we all knows that concrete can’t be twisted like chewing gum. In order to find my own path to solve this problem, I passed this question and try to connect wrap and tension together. At that moment, I realize that snake can be a perfect central element of my sculpture work. When we think of snakes, we cannot help shivering, because they are so perfect and contain a strong power in there slender body. That is what I want! When snakes shrink their muscle and make their body looks like letter “S”, you should know that they are well prepared to do their bushiness, they will release their body like using a bow and shoot themself to their enemy or prey. Snake can be seen as the creature combined “tension” and “wrap” perfectly. Considering the reason above, I decided to make a sculpture of snake for this topic. Than what about concrete ?Who cares, I will use another material to replace it, and that material will be much easier to find and use.

Part2:about material ( I realized that I have to care about the material.)

It is clearly that concrete can’t be used in the workshop this time, cement we can find in the building material market are usually dust like powder.If we don’t have any protection while shaping it, powder floating in the air will harm our respiratory system. The most important thing we need to do is to find a substitute for cement.

In my first attempt, I try to use some paper cutting skills to make the surface of paper looks like concrete surface, sure I failed with this, the color of paper make my work looks like normal wrinkled paper...I think if I use some oil color, the paper will looks good. The only question is that I don’t have enough time to do it, I only have two days to design and work on my sculpture.

After my first attempt, I decide to go and find a kind of material which is affordable and easy to shape, in fact I succeed this time. Plastic clay is a good choice for me, I can turn them in to different shapes with my knife or even bare hands! According to the information given by the seller in the store, next week they will buy in a new, white clay. If that is true, then I will try to use this new material to make sculpture. PS:This time I will try to color it.

Part3: skills I learned from making sculpture.

For two days, I spend a long time on learning how to use my knife, for about five times, I almost hurt myself while using it. Finally, I go to youtube and watch some video about sculpture making, I can’t make sure if I understand all the knowledge given in the video. however, I can control my hand and my knife better now 扫描全能王 2021-09-17 09.14_5.jpg .
